the construction of a separate firewall on my network without a head.?

I have a team that is just sitting around my room and I want to make it a headless firewall / proxy server maybe even a DHCP server and put it between my modem and router. I would do with Linux, so no 'bog Down with the system of things. The only tutorials can be found online for 2000 and using dated software. Can anyone point me in the right direction??
