What does a proxy server do in BitTorrent?
So I was tinkering with BitTorrent and I found this thing in Options> Preferences >Connection called “Proxy server”. I don’t know what this does but from the research I did it sounds like a security measure. Is this true or not? If it is then will it allow me to download without Cox being able to find out what I’m doing or will it at least make my downloading relatively secret? Oh, and which server should I use Socks4, Socks5, HTTPS, or HTTP?

A proxy server allows you to hide your trail. If you know the IP of an anonymous Proxy you can enter it in there. When you go through the proxy, the person at the other end can only see the IP of the proxy and not yours.
It would be similar to 3 way calling. You call a friend. That Friend uses 3 way calling to call another friend. Now you can talk to that 2nd friend while his caller id shows the phone number of the 1st friend.
